Your instructor, MTN Cooking Studio

Hi! Welcome to MTN Cooking Studio. I am Arisa. I am a certified fermented food expert and Japanese cooking instructor. I like to cook, eat and share. They are my passion-triplets. My childhood is filled with food memories. I was born and grew up in Japan until I moved to San Diego for college. My mom is an amazing cook and cooked us a feast every night. My favorite tasks my mom gave me were folding dumplings and going to a tiny vegetable store by myself (it was perfectly safe to do in the town I grew up). My dad, not a chef, owned restaurants, and he is a food and sake pusher. He wants you to be full and tipsy. My grandpa often brought us fresh fish he caught. My grandmas pickled ume plums and baked us mushi-pan, steamed bread, for snacks. Those memories are so vivid. A memory train goes on and on. When I moved to San Diego, I lost the connection to whole foods and authentic Japanese food. I survived on In-n-out Burgers, Lean Cuisine, and Krispy Kream just like everybody else around me. But that lasted about four years. I worked as an auditor for a public accounting firm a couple of years after I graduated from college. As one can imagine, not much creativity went into my profession. I soon gravitated toward a kitchen where I can be playful and creative, and I started sharing the food I cooked with friends. That was the beginning of my cooking adventure. Choosing cooking as a creative outlet was a natural choice for me as I grew up loving food. Forward to 2015, I met my now-husband, Andrew. He made me orange-ish chicken on our fourth date. I knew I happily wanted to take a cooking role in our relationship. He has been the best taste-tester and dishwasher and everything in between! I took a detour, but eventually, my cooking became a reflection of my upbringing; not just in the sense that I now cook Japanese food more than anything else but also in the way I cook. Cooking Japanese food and learning about it has allowed me to reconnect with my roots. It also became a way to give my two years old son a sense of identity as a half Japanese living in America. Along the way, my passion for sharing knowledge and stories has grown. So here I am. My hope is to have fun cooking together and share the knowledge, stories, and, of course, scrumptious food with you. About MTN Cooking Studio As you may guess, MTN stands for mountain. My Japanese family name is Isayama, and yama means mountain in Japanese. I wanted to carry on my Japanese family name in this place. After all, I would not be sharing Japanese cooking and culture with you if I was not born Isayama.

Learn, Eat, and Have Fun! Join me for a virtual, interactive, real-time Japanese cooking class in the comfort of your very own kitchen. All classes are about bringing real-deal Japanese flavors to your creations. In each class, we focus on learning specific elements, techniques, or ingredients that are unique and essential to Japanese cuisine. That way, you can later recreate the dishes or jazz them up without losing the essence of the authentic flavors. We will cook side-by-side, and you will be guided through each step of the way. If you prefer, you are welcome to just watch and learn during the class and cook later. Each class is small and personal so it is easy to ask lots of questions and troubleshoot along the way! PRIVATE PARTIES are great ways to host celebrations, team building, and just because! What is better than connecting with your families and friends over some delicious Japanese food?
