Hi, I am Ranji, I am a London-based food writer, food photographer & recipe developer, specializing in modern Sri Lankan inspired cooking and the founder of Tooting Mama. Proud to be London born and bred living in Tooting with her husband, two kids, and a dog. Tooting Mama is the place where I showcase and share the food I make. I specialize in Sri Lankan and South Indian food, as well as recipes on healthy eating. When I was little I’d watch my mum make curries, marveling at the magic she created in the kitchen. I’d perch on a stool in the corner of the kitchen taking in the smells of the spices as she ground them in her pestle and mortar to make curry powder. I’d quietly take mental notes of how she made her curries. Now my parents are older, frailer they don’t cook. If I don’t cook these recipes and this food culture will be lost. I am now in possession of my parents’ cookbooks, using these for reference I am recreating the joyous food memories of my childhood. And creating new ones. Especially ones that are tasty and easy to make. On Tooting Mama, you will also find other kinds of recipes such as cookies (if you haven’t tasted the delight of tahini and chocolate you are missing out!), banana bread, beetroot hummus. I want to share recipes that work, recipes that taste good, recipes that lift your soul.


Description

How would you like to learn to make Indian food from scratch? No ready-made sauces, no shortcuts. You can with my Cook-Along with Mama series of live online cooking classes. Together we’ll make a range of Indian and Sri Lankan meals live, in real-time together through the power of zoom. We’ll make the type of food I regularly serve at home to my family. While you’re cooking in your kitchen, I’ll be cooking in mine and together we’ll chop, slice, dice, and cook the delicious Indian and Sri Lankan meals. Meals you can eat straight away right after the class. Don’t worry if you’re not a great cook, I’m going to be there right alongside you, supporting and guiding you and answering any questions you might have. WHAT WILL YOU MAKE DURING A COOK-ALONG WITH MAMA COOKING CLASS? During the live online cookery classes, we’ll create a number of Indian and Sri Lankan recipes. I’ve chosen these recipes that I make for my family. All the recipes I’ve chosen are easy to make are a great introduction to Asian family cooking. The dishes we are making are a combination of meat or vegetarian. And because you are cooking them in your kitchen, you can adapt the recipes to your dietary requirements. You just choose what you want to make. Here are just some of the recipes we’ll be making during the live, online cookery classes: - Chickpea and spinach curry - Stuffed bell peppers with lamb keema (or a vegetarian alternative) - Homemade oven-baked tandoori style chicken with a green been cooked in coconut side - Vegetable dhal – super healthy and super delicious - Sri Lankan style prawns cooked in coconut WHEN DO THE COOK-ALONG WITH MAMA LIVE ONLINE COOKING CLASSES START? Classes will usually start around 17:00 UK time/9:00 AM PST and will last between 60-90 minutes. At the end of the class, you will have fabulous food ready to eat. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO TAKE PART IN A COOK-ALONG WITH MAMA CLASS? You can use any mobile device or laptop – anything that you can have near you while you cook. You need to download Zoom on to your mobile device before the class starts. After you have booked your online class, you will be sent a shopping and utensil list as well as a Zoom link for the class. You will need a fully functioning cooker and oven – it doesn’t matter if it’s gas, electric, or induction.
